Pitti Uomo: a journey into the fashion show between creativity and extravagance
Pitti time: January is the month of fashion dedicated to the male world. Yesterday officially started in Florence, the week of the Italian fashion that will present all the news and trends concerning the male universe.
It is a temple of creativity, of exuberance and style, original look and often extravagant. As always, the men’s fashion show, currently underway at the Fortezza da Basso in Florence, becomes an opportunity to show off and flaunt style details, including eccentric headgear, colorful accessories and outerwear refined by retro inspiration
It is one of the most important events in the international fashion scene. But what are its origins? What is your story?
It all began in 1952, when a noble man from Lucca (Tuscany), Giovanni Battista Giorgini understood that Italy too must have been the stage hosting the fashion shows, like the Parisian Haute Couture. On February 12, 1952, he gave life, in his home in Florence, to the First Italian High Fashion Show event, initially dedicated solely to women’s fashion. Immediately after the Parisian fashion shows, American journalists and buyers arrived to admire the collections of the most important Italian couturiers: Carosa, Fabiani, Simonetta, the Fontana sisters, Schuberth, Vanna, Noberasco, Marucelli and Veneziani, who showed their creations for spring /summer of the same year.
Palazzo Pitti (from which the name derives). On November 23, 1965, all the great designers decided to transfer the presentations of their collections inside the Roman ateliers and the baton passed to the city of Rome that officially became the capital of the Italian Altamoda, while Milan became the ideal stage for the Prêt-à-porter fashion shows with Krizia, Missoni and Albini.
However, Florence continued to be the protagonist of the fashion world with fairs dedicated to knitwear and crafts, with particular attention to men’s fashion. So it was that in 1972 Pitti Uomo was born, an event that showed the mastery of Italian artisans in creating classic and traditional clothes compared to the collections that were seen in Milan and Rome. Italy showed the world its creative and craftsmanship: Florence for yarns and knitwear, Milan for pret-à-porter and Rome for High Fashion.
This year the theme chosen for the 91st edition is “Pitti live movies”, that is the cinema, in all its nuances, in fact the face of this edition is a model reminiscent of the “James Dean” icon, because fashion and cinema are both artistic expressions of one’s own self, of one’s body and mind, of the pleasure of living and of the desire to perform. The staging of this new edition consists of pavilions built as cinemas and in a central square animated by ” movie theater district “in American style with big posters that wink to the big blockbusters and Hollywood classics.
Today Pitti Immagine organizes, in addition to Pitti Uomo, also Pitti W (dedicated to women’s pre-collections), Pitti Child, Pitti yarns, Pitti Fragrances, Modaprima (dedicated to fashion for large-scale retail outlets), Taste ( dedicated to high food and wine) and Super, which is held in Milan during the weeks of women’s fashion and is reserved for research brands and new talents.
Pitti Men is an event that has as protagonists not so many the most important designers but the clothing brands and their products. We are talking about men’s ready-to-wear fashion, that is, those garments that are immediately ready for the next season’s market. Twice a year (January and June), Italian and international companies present their collections for the following year to the press and buyers.
The event was so successful that in the following years Grand Hotel of Florence was organized and then found space in the Sala Bianca of Palazzo Pitti (from which the name derives).
