Leonardo da Vinci: The Salvador Mundi is “The Sacred Grail of the Oldest Paintings” and is one of the most important works of the 21st century.
It was a captivating, tight fight. 19 minutes of a intense, compelling and concise duel to win the masterpiece of the genius Leonardo da Vinci, Salvator Mundi. The bids – with several tens of millions of bucks – seemed to never stop. At the end of the time the hammer that closed the auction rebounded throughout the hall and a thunderous applause accompany it. The batter, Jussi Pylkkanen, Global President of Christie’s, halted the $ 400m gavel, which with auction fees raises the price to $ 450,312,500. The highest price ever paid to the world for an auctioned artwork. For now the buyer of the work is unknown. Read the New York Times article clicking here. “Salvator Mundi” is a oil painting depicting an image of the blessing Christ. In the portrait Christ has a raised hand while in the other holds a glass sphere. A very rare piece, one of the 20 still existing works of the Italian genius. The story of this work is complex, even the attribution to Leonardo is universally accepted.
Leonardo da Vinci came to Rome in 1513 to the court of Giuliano de’ Medici but he was excluded from the greatest works of the time entrusted to illustrious minds as Michelangelo or Raffaello. An eternal and silent conflict.
Today Rome has been trying to bring the genius of Leonardo da Vinci together with Michelangelo and Raffaello into a fascinating triangulation among the greatest masters of the Italian Renaissance. All the abilities and peculiarities of the painter, inventor and scholar are exclusively on two permanent exhbitions in the Eternal City. Only in Rome.
The most controversial sides of the artist’s personality is shown: his creative instability, the incomprehensibility of many of his masterpieces, and the almost feminine kindness of his character.
But Leonardo da Vinci is also a mystical character, in his paintings and masterpieces. It’s like he wants to tell us, through his works, something deeply secret, decipherable only for the brightest minds.
Come to Rome to admire the masterpieces of the genius of the Italian Renaissance and find out what secrets lie behind his works.
